As sustainability champions,we hold ourselves accountable
Sustainability has always been an integral part of San Miguel Corporation’s operations—long before it was ever a buzzword and a catalyzing force for positive change.
There is no better example in the Philippines of a circular economy practice—where almost zero waste is generated through the continuous recycling and reuse of materials—than San Miguel Brewery’s returnable glass bottle system, which has been in place for most of our 130-year history. Interestingly enough, western economies are now adopting this practice, moving away from a throw-away business model towards reusable and recyclable packaging.
Beyond the immediate environmental aspects it addresses, the returnable bottle system has also helped prop up our informal economy, providing income for bottle collectors and washers nationwide, whose livelihood depends on this virtuous cycle.
Reducing our impact on the environment and fostering social inclusion have been thoroughly ingrained in the San Miguel culture over the decades. They have become such integral parts of the San Miguel way that, quite honestly, we’ve overlooked packaging them as sustainability initiatives.
Instead, we’ve loosely referred to these sustainable practices as part of our corporate value system of malasakit—that uniquely Filipino value of helping others without being prodded and without expecting anything in return.
We manifest malasakit by taking care of our host communities, taking only what we need, doing good by everyone we come by, and working to make life better for our people.

San Miguel has gone well beyond mitigating the problems of climate change or social inequality. Our goal is to use the present crisis to leap into a future reality that is far better than where we currently find ourselves.
And as we’ve discovered, malasakit is both actionable and sustainable. Apart from investing in more circular business models and sustainable water and waste management systems, we make sure that our projects help spread the benefits of economic growth beyond our host communities. All of our capstone projects consider the need to provide lasting solutions to problems that have long beset our communities, our country, and the environment. We've tried to be less resource-intensive and participate in sectors that can expand our economy and create more jobs. Built into our airport project is a solution to end flooding in Bulacan province. Skyway Stage 3 will serve as a platform for the country’s first bus rapid transit system. The Pasig River Expressway includes the rehabilitation of Metro Manila’s primary waterway. Our Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) project will provide reliable power supply to rural municipalities and towns. Easily scalable, it will also make renewable energy more viable throughout the Philippines. The pandemic has thrown into sharp relief the role we can play in addressing the sustainability challenges caused by the very businesses we are in. As a company, we have the power to solve problems, and I, for one, believe that we've not outsourced these problems to environmentalists or development experts. We’ve never taken the posture that these are someone else's issues and that it’s somebody else's job to correct them. San Miguel has gone well beyond mitigating the problems of climate change or social inequality. Our goal is to use the present crisis to leap into a future reality that is far better than where we currently find ourselves. Lastly, we share here the sustainability policies we arrived at, after a thorough review of all our operations, and extensive dialogues between our business heads and management teams. This framework, made up of three important objectives, will guide us on our sustainability journey. It’s a framework that will challenge us in what we can hope for, and keep us accountable in this new decade.
